Book I: Portal Of God

Mindy could feel Maia's muscles, tensed hard like marble as she laid a comforting hand on her shoulder. The bigger woman jumped a bit, her eyes having been locked on the Soviet Superwoman for the last few minutes.

"Olga's one of the toughest people I know. She's going to be alright." the smaller red-haired heroine said in her best confident voice. Maia glanced over at her and Mindy could see the striken look in her eyes, even through her signature red visor.

"It doesn't matter to someone like him." Walkiria growled as she returned her gaze to the man who was standing only a few feet away from her struggling wife, still held fast to the broken concrete. "Why the hell can't we move in and take the bastard?"

"And do what?" General Bardak asked without turning around towards her, his armor-clad form only a few feet in front of her, flanked by Coventina who was concentrating intensely on the area directly in front of them. "You'd end up like Olga or worse. I know you're concerned, we all are, but this is Concussion we are talking about. What in the world compelled her to rush him without waiting for any kind of back-up in the first place?"

"She's headstrong and impulsive at times. Maybe she thought she could talk him down...I don't know." Maia replied. Deep down she knew the reason and she guessed Bardak did too: Olga responded to the innocent people and didn't think. Her only focus was on saving lives and trying to stop Concussion. To Olga it never mattered who the threat was, be it Ultrawoman, Genocide or anyone in-between.

Bardak's helmet nodded up and down. He himself also understood her reasoning for jumping in, but the situation was dire. One of the Guardians was already down and countless lives were at stake. It was up to him to not only find a way to stop Concussion, but to keep up the rest of the team safe and intact. Maia was obviously emotionally involved, but she wasn't letting it compromise her as an asset. She was a soldier, like he was, and that training was still there. He turned to Coventina. "Robin, Walkiria made a good point, why can't we make any kind of approach past this spot?"

The aquamancer snarled and flipped back her hood, releasing a flood of long, ebony locks. The frustration on her face was apparent by her flushed cheeks. "Bastard seems to have some kind of barrier up preventing anyone from entering the area, or us more specifically. It seems to be created from pure thought energy, which is the bitch of it."

"How did Olga get through then?" Walkiria said, her hands balling into tight fists.

"He probably put it up after she interfered." Robin answered, folding her arms across her chest. "And it gets worse. The area he's set himself up in is also where a powerful multi-dimensional portal is located. Very powerful magnitude. I doubt it exits into another Earth dimension...probably one of the higher planes."

"What could he do with something like that?" Mindy asked, shifting her gaze from Concussion to Robin.

"Someone like Concussion with a portal of that magnitude? I shudder to think. It won't be good." It was a true statement. Robin could think of at least a dozen different scenerios and none of them ended well for the city, let alone the rest of humanity.

Cedric's voice suddenly broke through loud and clear over the Guardians communication channel. "Major Renown and I have managed to get most everyone out of the immediate area and law enforcement is clearing out the next few blocks. Emergency medical is setting up as well with Lin and Lady Liberty giving them a hand with the wounded until Angelina arrives."

"Keep us informed Cedric," Bardak replied, "and good job."

"Also," Cedric's voice chimed in again, "Anyone know why he's just staring up into the sky? Just curious what he's been eye-balling."

"Probably looking at the portal Robin informed us of." was the General's response, but Conventina was already shaking her head.

"Nope, it's not there. No idea what's he doing. It's like he's waiting for something." Robin said shaking her head.

"Or someone." Bardak added through tight lips.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Since the Guardians arrival on the scene, David had been patiently waiting for her to arrive. She was close...so close he could almost smell her. Perhaps she needed a bit further prodding to get her to come out. Concussion levitated himself into the air, even as the Soviet Superwoman watched helplessly nearby, still straining to free herself from the tendrils. David hovered level with the Stranger Industries rooftop and looked over at the building opposite. As before, with only a stare the building began to rip itself free from it's foundations and come crashing down to the earth of an explosion of dust and debris.

"SHOW YOURSELF! Or I'll create so much destruction you'll be sweeping up bodies for weeks! Do you hear me!"

The angelic woman swooped down on feathered wings, a heavenly golden glow emitting from her delicate form. Angelina spoke in a calm, melodic tone, even as the shattered remains of the building crumbled and splintered to the floor below her.

"Was this your intention then David? To summon me here?" she asked.

"You know why you're here Celestial! I need you to willingly pass through the God Portal! With your passing, you will destabilize it and then I will siphon off it's power! I will be more powerful than the Continuum!"

Angelina smiled at him with an uneasy smile, the kind given to a small, defiant child who still doesn't understand why he is in trouble. "Oh David, this isn't going to accomplish anything. You will only be more frustrated...more full of rage. Stop this now, before any more lives are lost or anyone else is hurt. I can help you David, I can..."

"STOP CALLING ME THAT! I AM CONCUSSION!" David bellowed at her, his lips quivering with anger. "You WILL pass through the portal or so help me I will lay waste to half of this city! I will summon up a volcano in the streets or crush it with a tsunami the likes of which the world has never seen and YOU will be responsible for all those deaths!"

Angelina bowed her head and spoke in a whisper. "Of course. I will do as you ask. No one else need be hurt."

Upon saying so, Angelina floated towards a spot in the air only a few yards away from where David was hovering. As she approached the invisible portal there was a great sound, like rushing water cascading down a great waterfall. A bright light suddenly filled the skies, becoming more intense as the sound grew in pitch and volume. The Guardians were forced to snap their eyes shut and look away. Only David continued to watch in awe. He could feel the warmth spilling out of the portal, like a Spring day flush upon his cheeks. It was beautiful...like gazing upon the face of God. He closed his eyes and prepared himself for what was to come. Soon he would be bathed in a power so magnificent, he would be able to do whatever he wanted. Destroy the hated Continuum...reset the universe...he would become the most powerful force in the cosmos, just as Xeranad had predicted he would, as he always knew he was destined to be.

Suddenly there was a great rush of wind and the portal closed in an instant, the blinding light disappearing as quickly as it had arrived. Nothing had destabilized. There was no fountain of Celestial energies to sup from....nothing had changed.

David hovered there for a moment more. He looked around with wild eyes. What had gone wrong? Why hadn't Angelina destroyed the God Portal? He didn't know...and his inability to explain it caused him to fill with a rage and a hatred he had never known before. The sense of loss...all of his plans suddenly collapsed all around him. He was only Concussion and he would never be more powerful than he was right now. The Continuum would continue on as would the rest of the universe. David's face contorted into a mask of ferocity. His hands curled into fists as he levitated further into the sky, his body shaking with fury. He thrust his head backwards and howled into the heavens a sound that carried all of his frustration and disappointment. It was like the wail of a banshee, screaming upwards. tears streaked down his cheeks as he slowly began to descend back towards the earth, his cry still echoing all around him and the rest of Angel Falls. Angel Falls. If he couldn't have his revenge on the Continuum, he would certainly have it on this miserable, pathetic ball of shit!

Concussion landed hard a few feet from where Olga was still futilely trying to pull herself loose. His eyes locked on her. So small...so insignificant...she struggled like an ant caught in a glue trap. That's all they were in his presence: insignificant insects.

And Olga would be the first one he would crush.
